Large battery storage, kinda

Big project means putting it somewhere.

So with my latest project ( the power station ), I’ll be needed a LOT of 18650. Since these comes from repurposed laptop battery packs, they don’t come in a nifty case or package that I can put them in while the project is ready to be assembled.

Behold, the ultimate DIY battery storage! ( Ok maybe not, but it’s quite convenient ).

Old 3D printer filament box
Perfect for 18650 Storage!

So the idea is quite simple. I’ve stumbled on somebody online that was putting other batteries in an old filament box and I thought about my 18650. The height is near perfect too for them to not move and the 3D print that holds everything inside is rather simple. The rest is some CA glue to glue the prints to the cardboard back and, that’s pretty much it. I’m my case, some shims were used to center the pieces.

Alignment using post-its.

Initially I wanted to have the whole tray print in one piece but, my printer is slightly too small so I had to split it in parts, which was not that much of a big deal.

Modular design

I’m also going to print some extra holder, just to have a storage on my desk for the “to be tested” cells. Way more convenient than letting them roll everywhere! 😄 The current one is just some of the trays for the next box but I’m going to make the test one, red. Because why not?!

Can also be bench storage.

If you want to have the STL files, here there are. There’s various combinations for you to make your own.

Hope you enjoyed!
