OpenWRT on RTL8196E in WiFi repeater – pt1.1
Part 1.1 : Tool failure…
So, I figured out that I would need to extract the firmware from the Flash memory. I found the tools needed (flashrom and binwalk) for the rPi and they installed great! Also found the correct pinout for the chip!… mega good news right?
Indeed, It went super well for gathering the information needed. The only problem… when I tried to hook the chip with the SOC8 clip I got, I realized that It was a <REDACTED> tool. The pins are not long enough to connect to the chip and I also noticed that the plastic that is supposed to slip in between the legs of the IC, is breaking and not really doing it job.
So, to ‘fix’ the issue, I can either desolder the IC from the board and put it in a socket, or I can patiently wait a week or two to get a different clip that I ordered already. Plot twist, I’m not gonna desolder anything just yet (except the 4 pin header because i needed a bit of room for the clip).
Here’s a picture of the tool I ordered and I’ll try my best to do a quick review of that new probe when I’ll receive it.

Now, we wait… again.
To be continued…
